Florida UFO Sightings in 1980

Saw a multi-colored, rectangular object flying through the sky from the NE to the SW. September 4, 1980, approx. 17:30: The sun was still up, but setting in the west.

While talking to a neighbor in the front yard, I had a strange urge to look at the sky. From the NE, a odd, multi-colored, box-rectangular object was silently zipping through the sky to the SW. If on the ground,its dimensions seemed to be about 30' by 30'.

It appeared to be constructed like a box-kite, with glowing, colored spars, as if they were fluorescent tubes seen on a carnival ride. Green, red, amber, violet, were the colors. The object rotated end-over-end as it flew.

It was at a height around 5,000 ft., and was moving at very high speed. I would guess the speed was around Mach 2 or 3, since it travelled from horizon to horizon at that altitude in less than 15 seconds, and disappeared behind a stand of Southern Oaks, from my perspective.

There was a peculiarity about the event that I won't forget: I sensed intuitively that the "craft" was under highly intelligent control, and was a "probe" sent for reconnaisance purposes by someone or something not of this Earth. (Weird, huh?).

Fleet of silver-ish cigar shaped objects, one appearing after another and then disappearing. Although I saw what I am about to describe a long time ago, I can still recall it exactly, as if it happened yesterday. I am by no means saying that what I saw came from "outer space:" just that I have never seen anything like it before or since and that it was very strange and un-earthly.

And while I believe that there is a good chance that there is intelligent life out there in the universe, I do not particularly believe that it is coming here. Furthermore, I am the type of person who needs to see proof of something that is so unimaginable before being convinced that it exists. Not a skeptic - but not a believer either.

My mind is open. I am writing to you because I would like to know if what I saw matches the description of anything that anyone else has seen, or if there is an explanation for it. Although there was another witness, I have not seen him for many years and we never really spoke about it afterwards, probably because I was facing the scene and got a much better look.

However, he definitely did see some of what I saw, so it was not just me. Anyway, this is what I saw. It was around dusk.

We were sitting at an outside swimming pool area in South Miami-Dade County in Florida, which is about thirty five miles south of Miami and near the Florida Keys (and the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico). I was facing south/southwest. I was absentmindedly looking at the sky, since we were just sitting there and relaxing and not doing much else.

All of the sudden I saw a fairly large, cigar shaped object that was silver-grey in color. It was very strange because it's not like it came from anywhere, it was just -there-. The sky was relatively clear, and I should have been able to see it come from somewhere before it appeared in my view.

For example, if you are watching an airplane fly, you can see it coming from somewhere and then it is in front of you and then you can watch it go away from you. But this object did not behave like that - one moment there was nothing there, and the next moment there was. And it is not like I even saw it appear - it was just "there" if that makes any sense to whoever is reading this.

It did not appear like "poof!" and it's there, it just WAS there, where it WAS NOT before. I cannot explain it any more clearly than that. So it is in the sky and I am watching it.

It makes no noise at all. Another strange thing was that it was hard to tell how high in the air it was. It's as if it was both close and far away at the same time.

Overall, it did not seem to be very high - it seemed to be lower than a typical stratus cloud. My best estimate of the altitude is around 1,000 ft. Not being able to tell the altitude also makes it hard to estimate the size of the the thing, but I am guessing anywhere from 100 feet long to 300 feet long.

It did not seem to be larger than any airplane or blimp that we have on Earth. It was also going slow, but not other-worldly slow (ie. too slow to remain in the air).

However, speed is also hard to estimate without knowing how far it was from me. It did not make any strange or sudden moves, and moved in a south to southwest direction, as if heading towards the Gulf of Mexico. It did not seem to have any lights on it per se, but it did sort of glow - consider that it was near end of dusk when I saw it and the sky was fairly dark.

It had no lights, yet I could see it. So it must have been illuminated in some way but it was sort of "hazy." Now - I would probably have forgotten about this a long time ago and figured that it was something that was somehow explainable.

However - what happened next is what convinced me that I was seeing something -very- strange. Just as the object appeared, so did many others. First one, two, and by the time they were done there were around fifteen to twenty of them.

They -seemed- to be emanating from the first one and then flying in a slow formation. They also seemed to be smaller, but of uniform shape and size. The strangest part of this whole thing was that I could never actually -see- the new ones appear.

It was like the first one - it WAS NOT there, and then it WAS there. It's not like I could see it come from the first one, or see it "blink on." I really cannot explain - even to myself - how exactly they came into view.

After a couple of the new ones appeared, I pointed it out to my friend, who had his back to it at the time. He saw about half of what I saw, I suppose. So we watched them for a couple of minutes more, then just as strangely as they appeared - they were gone and I never saw them, or anything like them again.

I expected to see or hear something about this the next day, but there was nothing. Other people HAD to see it. The only thing that could help to explain what I saw is that it occurred in the general area of Homestead Air Force Base - but these things were nothing like anything else that I ever saw come from the base (or anywhere else) and I lived there for almost twenty years.

They were not searchlights, nor did they look like anything else that man has ever made. And the way that they "appeared;" I have never seen anything even remotely like that, anywhere else. That's my one UFO sighting.

I say UFO because as far as I am concerned, that is exactly what they were - unidentified flying objects. I am not saying that they came from another galaxy. I do not know.

It was definitely strange enough for me to write to you about it, around twenty-five years later (please note that the date of viewing that I entered here is very much approximate. It happened sometime between 1980 and 1983, and probably closer to 1980. The day and the month are a total guess - it was a warm evening, but we are talking about the Miami area and it's always warm in the evening).

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has seen something similar, or who can explain this. Please - only write to me if you saw either exactly what I saw or something very close - or if you think that you can explain what I saw, or if you are an investigator who wishes to hear more. But I am not a UFO "buff.

Large triangular craft going east over the Atlantic Ocean. On July 20th, 1980, I was an employee working security at the St. Lucie Nuclear power plant.

At that time they had remote outpost from the plant and not within the confines of the nuclear plant itself. Afterwards, I became a Florida State Trooper. I was alone, and at approx 1300 hours, I was looking at a clear night sky, looking for falling stars and just gazing at the night sky, it was a very well moonlight type of night.

All of a sudden overhead at approx 2,000 feet, I began to see an object coming from the West heading to the east towards the Ocean. The craft was dark and all I could see at first was a nose cone type shape. As the object passed directly overhead, I realize the enormous size of this triangular ship with NO sound.

It had to be aircraft carrier size and it was just floating by slowly. I was in just awe of this thing and scared out of my wits. I could distinctly see port hole type windows on this perfectly triangle craft and I estimate that the thickness of its sides to be maybe 3 stories high.

As it passed I could also see 3 distinct circular huge propulshion systems with no sound and emitting a unbelievable white glow where we would normally see jet engines. I watched this craft go out over the Atlantic Ocean heading East until it disappeared from my sight. By this time I expected the entire plant to be going crazy and the radios going crazy, BUT there was not one single radio transmission or alarm and nothing was said.

At the end of my shift, I expected someone to also say something about what I observed, but no one did? The only person I told this too was my mother and for the past 34 years, I never told anyone else about this incident. At the time I couldn't imagine a flying craft in the shape of a triangle, until I saw the "Phoenix Lights." Until then I thought maybe I was hallucinating or dreaming.

But I think of this incident often and can clearly see it in my memory as if it was yesterday. When I saw what happened in Phoenix, Arizona, it gave me more credence as to what I observed 34 years ago.

Certain things happen to you in your life that you never forget and this is why you know they are real the rest of your life. I'm now 47 years old and successful in the Exporting of wastepaper to China, India, etc. When I was twenty years old I lived in Miami on Collins Avenue facing the Atlantic Ocean from the 17th floor of my Grandmother's apartment.

I had the apartment to myself for the entire summer and it was time well spent. I loved the beach, the girls, etc. I have ALWAYS been a morning person and remain so to this day.

I've never needed an alarm clock and rise most mornings before 5am. I've never been into alcohol or drugs of any kind. In fact I love my lucidity and enjoy my conscious life.

I was wide awake that morning and could not wait to step out onto the terrace to look out over the entire Atlantic Ocean and feel the sweet breeze of freedom that was my youth. I was smart enough to know how young and free I was because I knew one day I would be who I am today and how hard it is to make a living and meet one's responsibilities. As the Sun was rose to light the morning sky.

a speeding craft came from way out in the ocean. I knew instantly this was something not of our experience. This triangular object did in fact stop at the shoreline and hovered about 75 feet above my vantage point from the 17th floor terrace.

There were bright lights on each point of the triangle and it just hovered there for what seemed forever. It hummed just enough that I could hear it over the sound of the waves beneath us. I was not afraid but felt glued to my fixed position as I gripped the rail of my Grandmother's balcony.

What happened next remains forever in my head all these years because the craft turned on its right (my left) and sped off at such tremendous velocity and made a sound like a team of muffled Lions roaring in unison. There was a faint liquid vapor trail and I could follow the craft with my eyes for the length of the coast until it then ascended into the clouds with a speed I can not comprehend or convey here. This thing zipped away like nobody's business.

I never forgot it all these years. ! I'm fam iliar with Harrier Jump Jets and even witnessed Israeli fighter pilots doing manuevers over the Negev Desert when I lived in Israel. I've seen them turn on a dime during arial dogfighting manuevers.

I was even buzzed by Israeli warplanes while working the fields of a Kibbutz and I know what F-18's can do. You don't hear them until they are already gone. Nothing on this planet can do what I saw that day in 1980.

I've never told anyone except my Mother and my Aunt. To this day I feel blessed to have witnessed something not from our imaginations but the reality of other life somewhere in the universe. What a gift.

I seen a pancake shaped object with rectangler size windows all around it with these lights just hovering over the water. On this Tuesday night coming home from church in tampa fl on the church van. We was going across the Courtney Campbell causeway.

I always like sitting by the window going home because I loved the night skies looking over the water. This night we was coming across the bridge I was looking up at the stars in the sky and saying to myself how beautiful their reflection look off the water and that is when I seen a pancake shaped object not too flat but it has rectangler size windows all around it with these lights just hovering over the water that is when I turn to my big sister and said look velma that don't look like a plane it is round shaped and that is when I said to her it look like a UFO ship to me and the moment I said that to her the object just strecked across the sky and vanished into thin air. I don't know why it took me over 25 years to report this, but it is still fresh in my mind like it just happen yesterday.

Early morning low hovering UFO over rooftops in N. Lauderdale, FL neighborhood in 1980. My step niece was 13 or 14 at the time.

She was up late (unbeknowst to her parents) watching MTV. Suddenly the house lite up like daylight. She went outside to see what was up and saw a UFO hovering just above the house tops.

The next day she discovered that others in the neighborhood had also seen the object and one of them had taken a picture of it. The person who took the picture made enlarged prints and left a pile of them at a local pizza parlour for anyone who wanted them. ((NUFORC Note: Date in 1980 is approximate.

disc shaped object spinning w/lights, no sound, hovering over me and husband in our pool in daylight. My husband at the time were in our pool in FL in broad daylight. We witnessed an object coming very quickly over us.

It was round with flashing lights and no sound. It hovered over us and the pool. My husband told me to run and get the camera.

When I came back out it was traveling upwards at a high rate of speed and I took pictures but it was out of sight in a matter of seconds. I still have those pictures but all I see on there is a little white spot since the sun was very bright that day. My husband called the airforce and the airport and they knew of nothing that would do that.

That husband is deceased now so can't put him down as a witness.

Glowing white circular object seen in the Florida Everglades around 1980. This incident is one of two. This occured near the Everglades Nat'l Park.

Me and a friend were having a night time picknick in the Everglades Parks. There was no road, I drove a 4x4 truck east fm US1 into the Everglades. We saw what appeared to be a Glowing White circular object traveling parallel to the ground about 6-7 feet off the ground.

It traveled very slowly. I would estimate around 15-20mph. It was not a meteor, it was going way to slow.

And it was not on fire, just glowing white light. It felt as if it was inspecting us. It emitted no sound.

We watched it go by and we later left. I currently work for Homeland Security. My email is ((e-address deleted)) if you need to contact me.
