Pennsylvania UFO Sightings in 1978

Four silvery disk objects observed I was returning home from a night at the horse races when I spotted four large stationary objects in the sky overhead at Mexico, PA. I stopped to see exactly what these things might be and encountered another couple who had also stopped for the same reason. We did not converse with each other.

Since it was Decemeber 10th, it was quite cold and clear. I stood on the side of the road and observed the four lights/disks for some time. To the naked eye, they appeared slightly larger than the moon.

They were motionless, hovering at what appeared to be approximately 1,500-2500 feet. A more precise calculation was impossible, since there was no way to gauge their true size. As I recall, some 21 years later, the four "disks" changed formation while I was observing them.

Since I had been at the racetrack, I had my trusty binoculars along, a pair of 7x35 magnification. Looking thru my glasses, I could only discern one thing of any interest: these objects, whatever they were, had a colored lights on the outer edges of the diameter; the colors were different; one was red, the other blue. The interior of these disks had no definition whatsover.

They just looked light some sort of self-illuminating disk. They did not seem to illuminate the ground below, as far as I could tell. The one thing that was curious to me was that they were overhead in the vicinity of a small, part-time radion station, WJUN, which is comprised of a small cement block building and a transmitter tower.

I stood there silently watching this phenomenon for some 10-15 minutes and finally departed due to the inclement weather and lack of any appreciable "activity" from these objects, aside from their changing of formation. They were still overhead when I left. The following day, someone (the couple on the side of the road?) wrote to the local paper, The Lewistown Sentinel about this event.

The nitwit at the paper responded that they were probably helicopters. Whatever these things were, they were NOT helicopters. There was no sound coming from these o! bjects.

As a footnote to my experience, I noticed several weeks later in the Sunday paper supplement, Parade Magazine, that folks in Australia has sighted the EXACT same four objects down there! Coincidence? Maybe, but I doubt it. This is the first time I have recounted my 1978 experience for publication. I have absolutely no idea what those four silvery objects were.

eight foot flurescant globe puts out lights then floats through antenna farm missing a dozen towers and a hundred cables i was on the phone long distance to harrisburg i was talking to a friend who was the gov. receptionist she was at home when suddenly all the lights went out in our neighborhood i heard the emergency gas generator come on it was highly unusual to my knowlege except for hurricane hazel in the 50's and an april wet snow that knock down some lines also in the 50's this was a first a local blackout during great weather my and i were star gazing out of our bedroom window it was a clear warm evening it was dark you could see to infinity from our perch above the tree tops we could watch the planes come in from the west of the city could see their incadesant lights ten minutes before they banked to the left and got ready to land at the airport we could see the flight patterens that swirl around that part of the metropolitan area there was no other air traffic in the area our window faced west to our right the ground rose up suddenly to form the ridgeline that is now avenue from the right of center the ground fell away to form a shallow valley surrounded by more rige lines except for that old franciscan friery at the end of the block that occupied a point of land directly in front of us we could scan the horizen for a hundred degrees or more i almost forgot the antenna farm in roxboro about seven miles away to the west about a dozen or so of them rose up 1500 feet or more they were invisible except for the dozens of rubie like lights that warned pilots to stay clear except for those lights and the fire tower lights coutousy of the emergency generator there was nothing but blackness i glanced to my right nothing but trees and roof tops as the ground rose up to block my view i glanced to my left nothing but those antenna lights i turned towards the center and shazaam! there is a globe of light eight to ten feet in diameter just floating silently at the end of my block i started to describe the scene to my friend over the phone it was bluish white like some giant flurescant light bulb i kept trying to see the aircraft that was supporting the light some undercarrige or something there was nothing just this silent globe of soft flurescant light hovering 300 ft away about sixty five feet off the ground you could see the trees that surrounded the friery behind the object you could tell the size and distance because you could see it was hovering over the corner of and one half city block away i kept talking to harrisburg as the globe started to slowly move on a direct line to our vantage point at our windoe ten feet twenty maybe fifty feet it came then without stopping the thing started moving to my left accross the venue (?) i saw the front and now i could see the side and back as it continued to "float" silently accross the shallow vally towards those red lights over atthe antenaa farm we watched it for almost ten minutes float ilently towards certain doom in the spires and cables that described the antenna complex i think i said something about the "vehicle" getting clipped by the guide cables or hitting a tower i thought we were going to see a crash it kept going towards those damn lights the globe was about to smash into that juble of cable steel and towers when what seemed impossible happened the globe glided harmlessly through the center of the antenna farm right through the mid point not over not around but through maybe hundreds of cables and a dozen or so communication towers without hitting anything it continued on in the same fashion until it disappeared into the night a few minutes later the electricity came back on the next day the local newspaper reported that the blackout was due to a squirrel or something the paper said the lights were out for 27 minutes over the next few years we saw other more astounding ufo activity in this half block area wait til i tell you about the pulsating red balls of light pulsating in segments like an orange from deep purple to bright scarlet seemingly undulating in a counter clockwise motion around the axis they appeared on several occassions each time getting a bit closer to us it changed the way i understood reality i used to be a skeptic i didnt believe in anything that could not be defined in the classic three dimensions.

Bright lights were blinding us and we heard a soft hum. As my Mother and I left our ceramics class to go to our car we heard a soft hum and then lights were shining on us. Because the lights were blinding us, we couldn’t see what was above us.

It seemed to be only 30 feet above us. We kind of froze because we were scared and didn’t know what it was. It kept getting closer and coming lower in a neighborhood with telephone poles.

We were out there for a couple of minutes, then ran back into our ceramic teacher's house. The next day in the news paper, it was reported that a blimp had been in the area and that’s what everyone one had seen. I can’t remember if my Mother called the State police and reported it, but we received forms to fill out from the government.

We filled them out and sent them in. We may have gotten a call about it because I remember my Mother saying, why would they take a chance at night coming so close to houses. I think they told her that the blimp operators were trying to scare people.

I was 16 and standing outside looking to mountain with road on top called Skyline Drive. It was night and my boyfriend and I were looking at mountain and were amazed that car lights could be seen when the lights, 5 in a row, moved slowly off mountain toward Reading Airport. The lights stayed in a row which made us think it was one structure, maybe blimp or something.

We waited for helicoptor noise or some noise but never heard anything as they became closer. Suddenly the 5 lights all got a little brighter and spread out and up very fast and disappeared. We were terrified and called Reading airport but they said they saw nothing and had no blimp or helicopters in area.

We searched the newspaper the next day but no one else seemed to have seen it. I don't tell too many people because it still frightens me to think about it.

1978 FLYING WAY TOO FAST TO BE A PLANE MY NEIGHBOR AND I WERE SENIORS IN HIGH SCHOOL. WE WERE OUT IN THE BACKYARD CLEANING UP AFTER A NEIGHBORHOOD PICNIC WHEN ONE OF US SPOTTED A LIGHT SPEEDING ACROSS THE SKY. WE CALLED FOR OUR FATHERS AND THEY GOT TO SEE IT ZOOM ACROSS THE SKY.

SEEN 2 PALE GREEN FLYING SAUCERS OVER ALLENTOWN , PA ** JULY 4TH 1977/78 ** SORRY, I AM THE ONLY EYE WITNESS THAT I KNOW OF REGUARDING THIS INCIDENT. I SAW 2 DISCS (SAUCER SHAPED) PALE GREEN IN COLOR ONE FLYING SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF THE OTHER AND THEY WERE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A FOOTBALL FIELD OR LARGER, THEY SEEMED TO BE SLIGHTLY ROUNDED ON THE BOTTOM AND SMOOTH NO WINDOWS,LIGHTS OR ANYTHING JUST SMOOTH. THEY WERE CUTTING THROUGH THE CLOUDS RIGHT OVER MY HEAD OVER JORDAN PARK IN ALLENTOWN,PA.

THEY DID NOT MAKE A SOUND AND WERE TRAVELING IN A NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST DIRECTION. I WOULD SAY THEY WERE TRAVELING AT ABOUT 500 TO 600 MPH, AND I WATCHED THEM CRUISE ABOUT 20 MAYBE 30 MILES UNTIL OUT OF SIGHT. THIS SIGHTING HAPPENED IN 1977 OR 1978 ON JULY 4TH NEAR MIDNIGHT AND THE DIRECTION THEY FLEW IN WAS IN THE DIRECTION OF A LOCAL AIRPORT KNOWN AT THAT TIME AS THE A.

B.E. AIRPORT (ALLENTOWN,BETHLEHEM,EASTON AIRPORT) BUT IS NOW KNOWN AS THE LEHIGH VALLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

I BELEIVE THEY MUST HAVE SEEN SOMETHING ON RADAR BUT I DID NOT SEE ANY INFORMATION IN THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER AT THAT TIME REGARDING THIS INCIDENT. I WISH I WOULD HAVE SOME TYPE OF VERIFICATON OF THIS SIGHTING VIA RADAR RECORDS ETC.

The craft I witnessed was saucer shape and there were lights laminating around the bottom. It was very large and right above a drive-in movie which was having a (swap & Shop) where there were at least 100 people. I was two blocks away in my front yard and watched with amazement.

I ran up the block and watched the craft as long as I could till it finely went out of site. I asked people at the swap & shop if they had seen the saucer and know one had seen anything. I couldn't understand why or how this could be because it was about as big as the drive in itself.

The saucer was hovering over the drive in for five minutes or so then moved on west slowly. My thoughts were it was a blimp or something like that but it looked too real to be a blimp. It was very real and I seem to be the only one who saw it.

Now that is strange. But true!.

Space craft hovers over pond The four of us were playing out near the pond when we notice a light coming toward us from the distance. Slowly it approched over the pond and dropped a long cylinder into the pond and started sucking up water. I got scared and ran into the house to hide under the couch.

My brother runs in and says we have to tell Mom and the other parents. We run to the next house and in panic we expalin what is going on right outside. At first they thought we were just kidding.

But finally we got them to come outside and by that time it was moving off into the distance. I remember seeing three little heads looking out of the craft. The faces was not clear but you could definetly see them.

That was the time I ran into the house. I've asked my brother about this over the years from time to time and he remembers it just as I did. My Mom also remembers us coming to her about this.

Thats was my only sighting ever.

Electric Blue Half dome with possible alient encounter. My son's interest in this phenomenon rekindled my memory of the incident (which was reported to UFORIC the day after the event). I was around 15 at the time.

My friends and I were camping out in my backyard which is adjacent to a golf course. As I lay in the tent (my friends were hanging out in the front yard.Hey.

I was tired), I noticed a bright electric blue light coming from the golf course area. Opening the tent, I noticed an object resembling a half dome with a small protusion coming from the top of the dome. It was oriented like a half moon in a verticle position rather than flat/horizonal.

There also appeared to be a base to the dome, cylindical in shape, attached to the flat side of the dome. Its diameter was less than that of the dome and was, perhaps, a 1/16 of the overall size of the object (which I estimate was maybe 40-60 ft in diameter). The object moved from east to west over the fairway when I lost site of it at the far end o the fairway.

A few minutes later, my friends joined me in the tent and I asked them if they saw it. They hadn't as the were in the front yard and their view was obstructed (they also weren't paying attention). We all went to sleep.

Around 02:00, I remember awakening to relieve myself. As I climbed out of the tent, I noticed a faint blue glow from the west. Then, the beam from my flashlight struck something no more than about 20 feet away.

Took me a second to realize I was staring at a person or being. It stood about 5 feet tall and motionless about 20 feet away just on the other side of a small hedge. Skin was grayish in color and the eyes were a burnt yellow color.

If it were clothed, it must have been close to the same color as the being. I stood staring at this being for maybe another 10 seconds absolutely stunned. It then seemed to dive on the ground and I didn't see it get up again.

Thinking my friends were playing a joke, I went to check on them. They were all asleep in their sleeping bags. I immediately awakened them, and we all got out of the tent, but we did not see the being again.

In the morning, we went to see where the faint blue light was coming from. Not far from my home, there is another golf course that also had an old abandoned iron quarry. This quarry was, maybe 500 yards from my house.

In the grass of the old quarry, we found evidence that something had flattened the grass and weeds in the old quarry. I don't recall seeing any indentations (like from landing gear), but the long grass had definitely been packed down in a circular shape. Back in my yard, we noticed something else as well.

Where I said that the being dove on the ground, there was a rough outline of a person in the grass.browned grass when the surrounding grass was green. The grass was also packed down, slightly, as if something had been there.

I told my father what I had seen and he called, I believe, UFORIC. They dispatched an investigator who took my story, a few photographs of the area, and radiation measurements of where I said the being dove on the ground. He also used some sort of visual dosimeter as well.

The investigator told us that there were elevated radiation levels in the area of question. He did not go to where I believe was the landing site. After filing my report, I never heard from the investigator again and pretty much put the event out of my until recently when my oldest son took an interest in "aliens" and asked me if I ever saw one (or even a spaceship).

Glowing sphere of light near St Clair - Burma road fire tower late 1970's-1980 era This is my recollection of an event that happened when I was about 20 years old. almost 30 years ago now. so I can't put an exact date on it.

One summer night, between 1977-1980. I read a short article in the local news paper that claimed that 2 individuals recently witnessed a UFO event up the local mountain near a forest fire tower. Everyone was familiar with this area, and it was a nice night out, so we decided to go up there for a few beers and who knows, maybe we would see something.

We were there for maybe an hour or so, and noticed lights shining upon the fire tower. It kind of looked like a spotlight, or maybe a cars headlights. Nothing unusual, so we weren't scared and we climbed the fire tower to get a better look.

When we got up near the top, we looked over in the nearby valley, and a yellow glowing ball just floated up from down within the valley, no sounds. Just a very erie looking glowing ball. And then it hovered there for a few minutes as me and my friend were amazed by this.

I would estimate the object to have been about 3/4 of a mile away, hard to comment on it's size at that range. It could have been 10 ft across. could have been larger 20-30 ft maybe.

The interesting thing was that we knew exactly where it was. Since we know the area so well. It came up with the mountain behind it, so it was not some very distant plane or star being mistaken.

You could clearly see it hovering there with the mountain behind it, less than a mile away. Down in that valley is an old abandoned strip mine that is flooded with water to the top. Anyway, after a few minutes we noticed the flashing lights again, coming from behind us.

And in the distance we could see what looked like some sort of plane coming in towards us. very fast, with blinking lights. We were directly between the glowing ball & the plane, so it was coming right at us at low altitude.

Within a few seconds what appeared to be a triangular shaped jet passed right overhead maybe 200 ft above us, and towards the glowing sphere, and we ran down the steps of the fire tower scared to hell. We got into our vehicles and got out of there pronto, a little shaken and amazed at what we just witnessed. It would be interesting to see if anyone else comes forward that witnessed this back then, as apparently there were other sightings here at that time.

Orange/yellow sphere of light without sound and traveled at intense accelleration with intelligence In the late 1970's, my brother and I were traveling on Route 53 after a severe thunderstorm. There were branches blown down from trees. We were traveling south from Houtzdale to Madera on Route 53.

We were below a plateau where a cow farm with a silo for cows is located. We both saw an orange-yellow ball of light hovering above a silo at the cow farm. He said to me, do you see that light? What is it? I began to speed up.

The sphere has stationary. As we approached the top of plateau, the light took off fast on north course toward Madera. I sped up to over 90 MPH and the light kept moving away.

I began to flash my headlights and beep the horn. The light source went to the horizon. Normally, at that speed, it should have vanished over the horizon.

But the light source stayed at the horizon and seemed to have waited for us to cross the plateau and decend into the valley. We went up on to the next hillside where we lost contact. There was an eerie glow in the area and my brother was deathy scared and did not want me to exit the car.

I exited the car but did not see anything. However, I believe it was something not of the ordinary. ((NUFORC Note: Date is approximate.

Enormous dark craft very slowly and quietly crossed sky overhead from east to west When I was 16, we lived on a gravel road seven miles northeast of Mansfield, far from street lighting and most stray light pollution. It was particularly dark that night, no moon or new moon. The atmosphere was especially clear and the stars were brilliant from horizon to horizon.

Many of the neighborhood kids were congregated in the road in front of our home talking when I noticed that all of the stars on the eastern horizon began to 'wink' out. Thinking it might be a cloud system moving in, I continued watching. The object was moving slowly yet too quickly to be a cloudbank.

There was no wind or breeze. As it approached overhead, we could make out only five, dim white lights stretching out north to south along the bottom of the craft. It passed overhead, silently and steadily, and continued until it disappeared over the western horizon.

The entire incident took maybe five minutes. We were all asking each other if we could make out a shape, but because of the inky black sky, none us could make out any perceptible shape. It was enormous however, based on the large expanse of starlit sky that it covered.

my friend and I were shooting pool at his home early in the morning, I belive it was a friday or saterday morning. when we heared a low rumble and a slight shaking sensation (LFO low frequence osalation) it kinda made us sick, upset stomach ect. he lives high on a mountian over looking the valley and several farms.

we looked for a helocopter but did not see any, then he looked up and saw a triangle shaped object, nudging me to look up we watched it move slowly twards Williamsport in a south or south east direction. a couple other people in the valley saw it also. we never discusted it with any one.

very bright light (white/purple) at the center of object and one smaller illuminating light on each side of the center light. At the time of this incident, I was only 14 years of age. Still, to this day I am fully aware of what myself and four friends had seen.

It was a warm, clear summer nigh's sky, no clouds or haze. My friends and I were sitting in an area of a local cemetery, which borders a one-block area of homes, and then another cemetery. We were sitting approximately 100 yards behind the cemetery fence at the entrance to a Family Mausoleum when I noticed a slowly moving, (almost hovering) object which appeared at what seemed to be directly over the fence of the other cemetery.

At first I thought the object was a helicopter slowly moving from right to left along the approximate fence area of the adjacent cemetery. However, I then realized that there were no flashing (strobe) lights, nor was they're any sound at all. Although, there was a very bright light (white/purple) at the center of object and one smaller illuminating light on each side of the center light.

(At this time, no shape could be determined) We, at this time, moved to the fence area of the cemetery in which we were sitting. By this time the object had moved slowly to about half way down the adjacent cemetery fence. We all then realized that this was not a known aircraft of any sort.

The object was no more than 500 feet away from us at an approximate altitude of 75 feet in the air. This was most apparent from the scaling of the homes that were between the cemetery, which we were in, and the cemetery fence, which the object was apparently following, and the tree line of the adjacent cemetery. It was at this time I could just make out an outline of the object.

(The lights were so bright, that it was most difficult to see thru them). I also realized that there was still no sound whatsoever. At this time, we all "jumped" the cemetery fence and ran as fast as possible around the end of the Block, (approximately 10 seconds) so that we could get even closer, if not under the object.

When we arrived, it was gone! I visually searched the Sky and realized that there was nothing in sight, not even a distant airplane; the entire sky was void of craft. Yet, it was clear starry night! I have created a digital rendering of what myself and my friends had seen that night which gives a good scale to go by. A fist would have covered the object and one half at arms length when first viewed.

Smaller craft came out of a slit in the sky above the roof tops in a residential neighborhood. It was a darker brushed metal color. Because it was such a long time ago, I am not quite sure the month of my siting, but I was with my girlfriend and it was the spring/summer of 1978.

We were starting 9th grade in the fall. The location was northeast Philadelphia around the neighborhood of Tacony. Somewhere in between our two houses we were walking and saw an unusual light in the sky.

It wasn’t a star or a plane because it was moving erratically but was controlled. For example the light moved from right to left a distance of several blocks in a second. Then we saw it move north to south in a distance of several blocks in a second.

And so on. We started running around the neighborhood following it. Somehow we found ourselves quite a distance from our houses, we were standing by a neighborhood school near Vandyke Street in Philadelphia.

It was a catholic school I believe. We were looking up in the sky and we lost sight of it. Suddenly, the craft came out of an invisible slit in the sky if that makes any sense.

The entire thing didn’t appear at once, it was as if there was an invisible door or envelope in the sky and something was coming through it. Now, it was not far up in the sky, it was about equal to the second floor of a row house. Right above the roofs.

I did not find the shape described in the form that you have. The best way I can describe it is if you put your two thumbs together and your index fingers together. It’s sort of a square shape that was sanded down at the edges to make it more rounded.

The color of the metal was something I had never seen before, the best way I can describe the color is like a brushed metal, not shiny. It was a darker color. There were no lights on the craft at this time.

When we saw it in the sky it was a light. There was also no sound. As soon as I saw it coming out of the invisible slit in the sky I took off running behind the school building after I picked my bottom jaw up off the ground  My friend stood frozen and just stared up at it.

I was peeking around the building looking at her. I don’t remember much after that except we walked home. I was very late coming home.

It only seemed like an hour but I cannot remember what time I got home. My mother was extremely angry with me especially when I insisted for days that I saw an unusual object in the sky which I followed and that was the reason I was late. Actually for years after I insisted but everyone just laughed at me.

It is strange but my friend and I never talked about what we saw after that. You would think we would. I do not remember having any contact with any type of being.

I moved out of Philadelphia later that summer to another state but have since moved back to Pennsylvania but not Philadelphia. In my thirties, sometime late 1990s or 2000, I was home alone and I woke up, saw what looked like a strange being with a big head standing in my bedroom door way staring at me, I started screaming and then must have fallen back to sleep. I’m not sure if I was dreaming or not.

I never reported this at the time of my siting because I was young, and no one believed me. I listened to you on Coast to Coast and you mentioned that you would welcome reports of sitings despite how long ago it may have happened. Thank you.

Ball of fire streaks eastward over Philadelpia, lands in Atlantic Ocean one mile from Resorts International right after Grand Opening Was on the corner of 6th and Reed in Philadelphia, with my uncle ((name deleted)) and neighbor ((2nd name deleted)), both now deceased. At about 8 P.M.

on or about May 29th, right after the Grand Opening of Resorts International, In Atlantic City, New Jersey. Was standing looking south on 6th Street,in Philadelphia, when this fireball streaked eastwardly,not more than a block from where I was standing at a height of less than a thousand feet. This fireball was huge, it changed colors faster than my mind could register from yellow to orange to green to blue but not in any special order and like I said it changed colors so fast I couldn't tell.

The next day in the Philadelphia Inquirer there was a report of the ball of fire landing in the Atlantic Ocean one mile off of where Resorts International is. Which is about 47 miles from where I originally witnessed the ball of light. ((NUFORC Note: Possible meteor.

I was contacted years ago by NICAP about a news story that was written about my experience in Bucks County Pennsylvania in either 1978 or 1979.Probably 1978. I was coming home from a business meeting with lawyers and representatives from Paine Webber about a new offering.

In the car ( a 1977 Lincoln Continental) was my accountant who was driving. It was midnight. It must have been early 1978.

We saw what appeared to be very bright lights in the sky on the same plane.About 6 of them.Each with intensity of search lights.

We saw them from the eastern shore of the Delaware River as we were heading west to my home. The lights stood still. As we crossed the NJ/PA bridge the lights still remained in the same position.

We drove up Wrightstown Road and they still were there.Comparing the height to radio towers nearby these were about twice the height. I got out of the car and had my Minolta 35 mm camera that I had used to photograph properties for our presentation to Paine Webber.

The camera worked fine. We stopped the car and looked up and the same lights were there. I tried to photograph them but the camera would not click to the next frame.

I tried and tried.One flash and then the series of lights moved without a sound at such a speed that they were miles away in a second or two. We both were shaking with excitement.
